    July's EmCena performance

❗Change to the July EmCena performance Please be advised that the July performance of the EmCena series, as announced in the “Sines em Agenda” publication, has been changed due to the illness of a member of the Teatro dos Aloés team. Therefore, instead of “My Sweet Orange Tree,” Teatro dos Aloés will present the play “A Camaleoa” at the Sines Arts Center on July 9 at 9:30 p.m. Directed by Elsa Valentim, this new production by the company features a script by Carolina Campanela that explores power dynamics through the daily life of a theater troupe. Synopsis: “César decides to stage *Julius Caesar*. But, just as in the Roman Republic, power corrodes relationships here as well. As rehearsals progress, discontent blossoms: actors who want to be more than just actors, interns who refuse to remain invisible. Everyone is seeking their place in the sun. They legitimately risk climbing the ladder and succeeding in a profession built on dedication, yet marked by precariousness and the promise of recognition. But what, after all, lies at the top of those promises? And is there really a top, or is it just an endless matryoshka doll with ever-increasing layers?" The EmCena festival is organized by the Ajagato Association, in partnership with the municipalities of Sines and Santiago do Cacém

As part of the collection’s national touring program, this exhibition offers a sensitive and expansive interpretation of the imagery associated with summer, taking as its starting point the experience of beach life and the forms of social interaction, leisure, and belonging that it evokes. Structured around thematic clusters—ranging from the human and the animal to imaginary geographies and bodies in suspension— the exhibition invites reflection on the permeability of identities and spaces, drawing upon instinctive, utopian, and sensory dimensions. At the same time, it is part of a framework of itinerancy and institutional collaboration, reinforcing CACE’s commitment to the circulation of artistic heritage and the expansion of its contexts of reception. In parallel with this exhibition, the curatorial program will include an education and outreach project titled “Silly Season,” focused on communication and access to contemporary art through training sessions grounded in initiatives that address contemporary themes in an engaging and appealing way. The result of a partnership between Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, e.p.e. and the Municipality of Sines, the exhibition is the result of a project developed within the framework of the Portuguese Contemporary Art Network (Directorate-General for the Arts), in partnership with the Sines Arts Center and mudas – Madeira Museum of Contemporary Art. Could the cultivation of sugarcane, cotton, or tobacco be at the origin of jazz, capoeira, and the blues? Let’s discover these and other stories about plants that changed history. Plants that have traveled far—plants we grow and consume in Portugal but that were brought from distant lands, such as sunflowers, pumpkins, tomatoes, and more. Based on the book of the same title, this is an integrative and interactive workshop where participants can touch, taste, and smell the plants—and at the end, take home some geranium or boldo cuttings, or sunflower seeds and other seeds.

Book presentation: "Miles: An Autobiography" by Miles Davis and Quincy Troupe (Fantasma Publishing)

July 23, 3:00 p.m. @ Pátio das Artes. Free admission “Miles Davis may have had a bleak view of society in general, and he certainly experienced racism and xenophobia firsthand, but his art does not reflect his view of reality—it is a sublimation of it. His music is full of rays of light, illumination, and enlightening silences. Miles’s trumpet, with or without a mute, speaks to us of life and the wonderful journey we can take through it. It is bucolic, nostalgic, visceral, fearless—yet even these contradictions are deeply human. That is what connects us to such honesty. Even when he is silent, Miles Davis teaches us the words with which we should face the future. He didn’t know what the future would be like—just as we never do—but he knew how he would confront it: with determination, hope, curiosity, and courage."
