Theater – Nights at the Square – The Broken Jug

Throughout the month of August, the “Noites no Largo” initiative presents the play “A Bilha Quebrada,” performed by Baal17—the Baixo Alentejo Educational Theater Company—which will tour various locations in the municipality between August 13 and 30 at 9:30 p.m., in Alvalade, Costa de Santo André, Cercal do Alentejo, Vale de Água, Cruz de João Mendes, Abela, Santiago do Cacém, Ermidas-Sado, Santa Cruz, Vila Nova de Santo André, São Domingos, and São Bartolomeu da Serra. The Santiago do Cacém City Council, with the support of the parish councils, aims through this touring initiative to provide the public with free street theater performances, as part of a clear commitment to cultural decentralization. Musical procession through the streets of each town – 9:00 p.m. | Start of the show – 9:30 p.m. In a village court, Dona Marta demands justice: someone broke into her daughter Eva’s room during the night and smashed her favorite jug. Adão, the authoritarian and corrupt judge, prepares to settle the case for his own benefit, but as luck would have it, on that very day he receives a visit from an inspector from the city. Eva refuses to tell the truth, and suspicion falls on her fiancé. For Dona Brígida, who never misses a thing, the Devil is involved in the matter. After all, who broke Dona Marta’s jug? Text: h.v. Kleist |Translation: Christine Zurbach |Direction: Rui Ramos |Cast: Bárbara Soares, Carolina Carvalhais, Filipe Seixas, Marco Ferreira, Marisela Terra, Miguel Magalhães, Pedro Ramos, and Sandra Serra |Set Design: Fabrice Ziegler |Costume Design: Inês Galveias |Hair: Eduardo Estevam |Makeup: Abigail Machado |Lighting Design: Filipe Seixas |Photography: Fabrice Ziegler |Graphic Design: Ana Rodrigues |Production Manager: Sandra Serra |Executive Producer: André Batista |Management: Rui Ramos Street Band: Musical Direction and Trumpet: Alexandre Pintasilgo |Tenor Saxophone: Pedro Guerreiro |Sousaphone: Sérgio Pisco |Percussion: Pedro Sequeira Duration: 70 min Rating: Ages 12 and up Free Admission

    July's EmCena performance

❗Change to the July EmCena performance Please be advised that the July performance of the EmCena series, as announced in the “Sines em Agenda” publication, has been changed due to the illness of a member of the Teatro dos Aloés team. Therefore, instead of “My Sweet Orange Tree,” Teatro dos Aloés will present the play “A Camaleoa” at the Sines Arts Center on July 9 at 9:30 p.m. Directed by Elsa Valentim, this new production by the company features a script by Carolina Campanela that explores power dynamics through the daily life of a theater troupe. Synopsis: “César decides to stage *Julius Caesar*. But, just as in the Roman Republic, power corrodes relationships here as well. As rehearsals progress, discontent blossoms: actors who want to be more than just actors, interns who refuse to remain invisible. Everyone is seeking their place in the sun. They legitimately risk climbing the ladder and succeeding in a profession built on dedication, yet marked by precariousness and the promise of recognition. But what, after all, lies at the top of those promises? And is there really a top, or is it just an endless matryoshka doll with ever-increasing layers?" The EmCena festival is organized by the Ajagato Association, in partnership with the municipalities of Sines and Santiago do Cacém

The Grumpy Old Man – Lanterna Mágica Theater May 20 | Wednesday | 11:00 a.m. | 60 min. | Free admission Synopsis: Damião is a retired artist who, against his will, moves into a nursing home. But behind the grumpiness lies a true showman: Damião sings, performs magic tricks, and loves to reminisce about the old days when he enchanted audiences. A fun and tender play about memory, stubbornness, and the art of never losing your sparkle, even when you grumble all the time. Initiative under clds-5g

(Well, actually, we're not even talking...) There's gunfire in the distance, a group of people flee with almost nothing and come across a river with no bridge. On the other bank, a hut (border? checkpoint? or watchtower?) and armed uniforms (military? militia? guards?). There's gunfire in the distance; we have to cross! On one side, a Belgian grandmother in a suitcase, dragged by her devoted Turkish son; a pregnant British woman, her Norwegian husband and their big Swedish baby. They will have to find their own solutions; naive, peculiar, bizarre, human. On the other side of the river, two guards do their best to enforce the rules. We also meet the goodwill of a humanitarian, a seriously injured man, a lost tourist and the inevitable reporter. There is no fatality, only circumstances and opportunities, and the means they find together to take advantage of them. On both banks of this river, they are buffoon-clowns talking to their respective grommelots. They are neither martyrs nor executioners. Just victims, without pathos, but full of hope, full of life, caught up in a situation that has been going on forever.
