The fact that the International Day of Yoga was chosen to be celebrated on the Summer Solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere) is not a coincidence. It is a moment of peak light, symbolising expansion, vitality, and awakening.
According to the yogic tradition, this period marks a sacred transition in the movement of energies within nature. After the summer solstice, the sun begins its southward journey (Dakshinayana), a time considered especially favourable for inner practices, contemplation, and spiritual realisation.
The outer sun becomes a symbol of the inner sun; and the solstice reminds us that, just as the sun illuminates the world, consciousness illuminates the human experience.
The International Yoga Day also represents the recognition that every kind of experience happens within us, and it invites us to reflect upon our interconnectedness with all that exists.
