✨ It is with great pride that we reveal the theme of Alvalade Medieval 2026:
⚜️ “From Illness to Healing” ⚜️
This year, we invite you to travel back to a time when caring for the body also meant caring for the soul.
Few people know that Alvalade was once home to the Hospital do Espírito Santo, an institution founded between the 14th and 15th centuries to welcome the sick, pilgrims, merchants, and travelers. There they found shelter, food, and, in case of illness, the support of physicians, surgeons, and priests, who sought to treat the body and comfort the spirit.
Inspired by this historical legacy, the 2026 edition will bring to life medieval medical practices, herbal knowledge, apothecaries, barber-surgeons, healers, pilgrims, and the stories of hope that shaped the lives of the communities of that time.

Museum Saturdays – Basket Weaving Workshops – an ancient art The event will take place on October 3 and 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Museum of Rural Labor in Abela and the Alvalade Museum of Archaeology, the “Museum Saturdays – Basket Weaving Workshops: An Ancient Art” initiative.
