Get directions

Let’s head up to Casa Novo Bowing to kick off a busy day. Getting our hands dirty. Learning, having fun, thinking, and creating together.

A group of artists awaits those who arrive to guide them through natural fabric dyeing, wood carving, Chinese calligraphy, vegetable painting, wool weaving, Punjabi embroidery, and the ancient sound of Tibetan singing bowls.

A day when activities unfold throughout the morning and afternoon in a calm and down-to-earth manner. Because grounding oneself is also a pause between flights, between dreams and accelerations. A safe place where one returns to the earth to breathe, rest, and rise again.

Being together, engaging with the things that give meaning to shared life, celebrating, and listening to the vegetables sing. The day will end with music. Music that laughs in the gardens of a land that must not be allowed to disappear. The earth / planet, of course.

Here is the invitation to land here and hold the earth in your own hands.

NATURAL FABRIC DYEING

With Gul E Raana

Gul E Raana is a textile designer and researcherfrom Punjab working in Barreiro at her Wenlin Studio. She brings her work preserving ancestral decorative techniques from Punjab, Pakistan.

Dye plants are identified. Fabrics are prepared and treated step by step. Color contrasts are explored, and rich tones are developed through immersion using indigo dyeing techniques.

For enthusiasts of natural dyeing, this is a practical introduction to plant-based dyeing, following classic recipes from Ajrak textiles. These fabrics are known for their deep, saturated tones and geometric patterns. Their creation involves a natural and intense chemical process. Mineral mordants, vegetable tannins, catechu—a plant extract used as a dye—and madder, a dye plant, all play a role.

EMBROIDERY IN THE PUNJAB STYLE

With Gul E Raana

Gul E Raana is a textile designer and researcher from Punjab working in Barreiro at her Wenlin Studio. She brings her work on preserving ancestral decorative techniques from Punjab, Pakistan.

This workshop is open to anyone, with or without experience, interested in hand embroidery and storytelling through textiles, set against the backdrop of South Indian folk traditions.

Each participant will create a motif inspired by Phulkari, a popular and traditional embroidery style from Punjab. Using a hoop and cotton thread, the workshop focuses on embroidering various stitches onto naturally dyed fabric.

Gul also explores contemporary approaches in which, for example, the density of the stitches affects and transforms the density of the patterns.

An afternoon to learn about the history and cultural context of this textile art, in which the type of fabric, the various stitches, the finishing techniques, and the care taken with the embroidery created are important factors in this craft of skilled hands.

ALMOST EDIBLE LANDSCAPES

With Ricardo Falcão

Ricardo Falcão returns to the world of drawing and painting, but this time using vegetables, fruits, and natural elements such as turmeric.

Turmeric paper will be one of the experiments. A sheet of paper or an envelope containing a short story.

When the leek is the brush, the beetroot the paint, and the red pepper resting against the eggplant become objects of observation, the vegetable garden transforms into a potential painting studio.

There will be a menu of stories to imagine, where characters made of food and vegetables come to life on turmeric paper. For painting, there will be food coloring paints.

A laboratory of colors, shapes, and almost edible landscapes that whet the appetite of the eyes.

THE SHADOWS OF FRUITS

With Sandra Sanches

In this workshop on vegetables and fruits, Sandra Sanches offers a new perspective on what they represent as they are drawn.

Through still-life drawing as a cultivation of the “gaze,” as an act of resistance, and as a gesture that demands an intentional pause, a new world is discovered in the vegetables we usually eat and that perhaps have never truly been observed.

The aim is to discover one’s own line without hesitation or fear. How can a collection of vegetables become a field of experimentation to understand what kind of line resides within each person?

There will be exercises in liberating the body and the line: drawing with the non-dominant hand, drawing without lifting the pencil from the paper to find the rhythm of the line, drawing the same vegetable with three different materials, drawing entire pages of attempts—not to get it right, but to discover the variety of lines that may emerge.

We will draw compositions, overlays, light, perspective, and various shadows.

R R 25*

Paula Lourenço

Since clothing is our second skin, these clotheslines in Odemira, photographed by Paula Lourenço, offer a thoughtful way of looking at what accompanies us whenever we step outside.

They reveal a hybrid human reality, full of secrets. A subtle work that sheds some light on the broader theme of the transformation of towns and villages around the world.

The clotheslines, as barometers of a sociology in motion and transformation, also focus on life’s simplest acts: dressing, undressing, washing, drying.

Dressing, undressing, washing, drying. Dressing, undressing.

Edible indie pop rock veggie music

CONCERT – A VEGGIE CONCERT

Bagini Carlone - IT

For these two musicians, the vegetable garden is a very fertile sound studio.

Here, words are like seeds, songs that sprout from plants of all kinds: pop, rock, and modern songs that reveal intimate stories of eggplants, zucchini, and red peppers.

They also perform short fables dedicated to celebrities like David Byrne, Paul McCartney, or Damon Albarn and their “green fingers.”

A humorous concert that uses Arduino electronic technology to transform vegetables into edible musical instruments, accompanied by flutes, saxophone, and guitars.

vocals, flute, soprano saxophone, electronic vegetables, and everything else: Jean Luigi Carlone

vocals and guitar: Bagio Bagini
