Rio de Janeiro, early 1970s. Brazil is enduring the harshest period of the military dictatorship. At the heart of the story is the Paiva family: Rubens, Eunice, and their five children. They live by the beach, in a home with doors always open to friends. One day, Rubens Paiva is taken away by plainclothes military officers and disappears. Eunice, whose search for the truth about her husband’s fate will span decades, is forced to reinvent her life and build a new future for herself and her children. Based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s autobiographical book, this moving story of one family helped redefine the country’s history.
