“Miles Davis may have had a bleak view of society in general, and he certainly experienced racism and xenophobia firsthand, but his art does not reflect his view of reality—it is a sublimation of it. His music is full of rays of light, illumination, and enlightening silences. Miles’s trumpet, with or without a mute, speaks to us of life and the wonderful journey we can take through it. It is bucolic, nostalgic, visceral, fearless—yet even these contradictions are deeply human. That is what connects us to such honesty. Even when he is silent, Miles Davis teaches us the words with which we should face the future. He didn’t know what the future would be like—just as we never do—but he knew how he would confront it: with determination, hope, curiosity, and courage."
